The ISM code has been set by the UN's agency for the maritime affairs. The ISM code provides a standard for safety management for the shipping companies and mariners. The ISM code has been in use since 1996 and hence experiences and practices have accumulated for more than ten years. The new project "Development of Maritime Safety Culture" focuses broadly on how the ISM code has affected maritime safety culture in the Gulf of Finland. The similarities and differences between different standards are evaluated and their implications on improving the operations in transport are discussed.
