New gastropod species found within TOPCONS project!

New gastropod species has been observed at the eastern Gulf of Finland. This small new species has been found in the samples collected by Metsähallitus Natural Heritage Services and Finnish Environment Institute within the sampling programme for TOPCONS project, and as part of the Finnish Inventory Programme for the Underwater Marine Environment VELMU. This species has been found in the vicinity of City of Hamina between the depths of 2 to 10 meters, and locally their abundances have reached 500 individuals per square meter. Even though genetic studies and taxonomkic consultations with international gastropod experts have been carried out, no definite determination of this new species has been successful. This species belongs to the gastropod family Murchisonellidae, but the origin of this species is so far unclear. Further studies are needed to confirm the description for this species. Press release about this new species can be found here (in Finnish).
